NSDC Chapters

NSDC Chapter Central

The National Student Data Corps Chapters provide a community of support for data science learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Each NSDC Chapter will provide resources and opportunities for students to learn data science, with a special focus on underserved institutions, students, and communities. Chapter members will benefit from learning resources, mentorship, research and career opportunities to launch their data science journeys.

Email the NSDC Team to learn more and receive the NSDC Chapter Development Guide.

Main Objectives of NSDC Chapters

The National Student Data Corps Chapters will have the following main objectives:

NSDC Chapters will connect data science learners of all skills and backgrounds from under-resourced schools and communities. Chapters will leverage the NSDC Learner and Educator Central resources and educational materials from their own institutions. Activities may include designing data science workshops, use cases, and capstone projects.

Community Development

NSDC Chapters will help data science learners build a community of growth and support. Chapters will share resources from the NSDC and the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub to connect with colleges, universities, and local community organizations that lack data science resources and opportunities.

Project-Based Collaboration

NSDC Chapters will provide learners with hands-on opportunities to apply their data science skills to research and real-world issues. Chapters will find and create datasets and use cases relevant and valuable to members of their local chapter. Members may leverage the open datasets curated by the NSDC or discover local datasets, building community collaboration and exposing students to different data science applications.

Internships & Career Opportunities

NSDC Chapters will provide students with pre-professional services to help them enter data science fields. Chapters may connect with career services at their institutions and leverage the NSDC Career Central and Outreach team to discover internship and job opportunities and pre-professional resources. Chapter initiatives may include resume workshops, career panels, mentorships, and networking events with local companies and nonprofits.

Start or Join an NSDC Chapter

Step 1: Fill out the NSDC Chapter Interest Form.

Whether you want to start a chapter or join an NSDC Chapter, fill out the NSDC Chapter interest form. Once submitted, NSDC Chapter Central will connect with you via email.

Step 2: Schedule an introductory meeting with the team.

With the contact information provided through the interest form, NSDC Chapter Central will reach out to you via email to schedule a virtual introductory meeting to discuss your interest in the Chapters system and the next steps in the process.

Step 3: Complete a more detailed application.

If you are interested in starting a Chapter, NSDC Chapter Central will provide a more thorough application form for you to fill out with more information and details on the leaders, ideas, and structure of your new Chapter. This will be sent privately via email and should be submitted for review within one to three months of receiving it.

Step 4: NSDC Chapter Approval Process

After the submission of the detailed Chapter application, the NSDC Central team will review the application based on the requirements outlined in the Chapter Charter Template and the potential to reach the goals of the NSDC.

After getting approved, each NSDC Chapter will have to create a Chapter Charter based on the Charter Template provided.

Expectations of NSDC Chapters

1. Time Commitment

To start off, chapters should aim to meet monthly or bimonthly. Student leaders of each Chapter should plan to spend 5-10 hours a month to develop and lead their chapter. As the NSDC Chapters develop and expand, each organization will be able to regulate its own scheduling and agendas.

2. Extending Outreach

Chapters will promote NSDC materials and events to Chapter members and the community. This includes sharing resources, activities, and initiatives such as:

3. NSDC Community-Wide Contributions

Chapters should plan on doing at least one of the following that will be shared with the broader NSDC community:

  • Gather and/or create use cases.
  • Premiere on a Data Science Career Panel Series event.
  • Create one or more videos on data science curriculum.
  • Construct other data science-related activities that will positively impact a community of learners.
