NSDC Chapter Central
The Northeast Student Data Corps Chapters provide a community of support for data science learners of all ages and backgrounds.
Each NSDC Chapter will provide resources and opportunities for students to learn data science, with a special focus on underserved institutions, students, and communities. Chapter members will benefit from learning resources, mentorship, research and career opportunities to launch their data science journeys. To learn more about the Northeast Student Data Corps and the NSDC Chapters, read the NSDC Processes & Procedures document below.
Main Objectives of NSDC Chapters
The Northeast Student Data Corps Chapters will have the following main objectives:
Start or Join an NSDC Chapter
Step 1: Fill out the NSDC Chapter Interest Form.
Whether you want to start a chapter or join an NSDC Chapter, fill out the NSDC Chapter interest form. Once submitted, NSDC Chapter Central will connect with you via email.
Step 2: Schedule an introductory meeting with the team.
With the contact information provided through the interest form, NSDC Chapter Central will reach out to you via email to schedule a virtual introductory meeting to discuss your interest in the Chapters system and the next steps in the process.
Step 3: Complete a more detailed application.
If you are interested in starting a Chapter, NSDC Chapter Central will provide a more thorough application form for you to fill out with more information and details on the leaders, ideas, and structure of your new Chapter. This will be sent privately via email and should be submitted for review within one to three months of receiving it.
Step 4: NSDC Chapter Approval Process
After the submission of the detailed Chapter application, the NSDC Central team will review the application based on the requirements outlined in the Chapter Charter Template and the potential to reach the goals of the NSDC.
After getting approved, each NSDC Chapter will have to create a Chapter Charter based on the Charter Template provided.
Expectations of NSDC Chapters
1. Time Commitment
To start off, chapters should aim to meet monthly or bimonthly. Student leaders of each Chapter should plan to spend 5-10 hours a month to develop and lead their chapter. As the NSDC Chapters develop and expand, each organization will be able to regulate its own scheduling and agendas.
2. Extending Outreach
Chapters will promote NSDC materials and events to Chapter members and the community. This includes sharing resources, activities, and initiatives such as:
- NSDC’s Learner Central, Educator Central, and Career Central
- Mentoring and volunteering opportunities found on NSDC’s Volunteer Central
- The NSDC Data Science Career Panel Series
- Other NSDC and NEHub-related events found on http://nebigdatahub.org/
3. NSDC Community-Wide Contributions
Chapters should plan on doing at least one of the following that will be shared with the broader NSDC community:
- Gather and/or create use cases.
- Premiere on a Data Science Career Panel Series event.
- Create one or more videos on data science curriculum.
- Construct other data science-related activities that will positively impact a community of learners.
