In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the NEBD Hub and the National Student Data Corps (NSDC) launched a career panel in October 2022. This panel highlighted the wide range of educational opportunities and career paths available in data science and data analytics for all learners, with a special focus on Hispanic-identifying enthusiasts, Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs), and the opportunities HSIs provide to their communities. This campaign culminated with the October NSDC Career Panel, held on Wednesday, October 19th.

Hispanic-Identifying Panelists in Data Science:
For the panel, we featured three Hispanic-identifying data enthusiasts about their educational and professional journeys with data to emphasize the varied contributions and significance of diversity in Data Science.

Ashley Atkins is the Executive Director of the West Big Data Innovation Hub housed at the University of California, Berkeley. Ashley’s Master’s Degree in Water Science and Management from New Mexico State University led her to vast research experiences in New Mexico, Bulgaria, and Greece. Ashley now helps the West Hub build partnerships across academia, industry, nonprofits, and government to connect research, education, and practice to harness the data revolution.

Gabriela Solis-Cavazos is a full-time Title III Research Coordinator at Laredo Community College. After receiving her Associate’s Degree from Laredo College, Gabriela then went on to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Biology from Texas State University. Recently, she implemented her education and research skills as the working Co-Principal Investigator for the NSF RAPID grant: “Using Real Life COVID-19 Data to Teach Quantitative Reasoning Skills to Undergraduate Hispanic STEM Students.”

NeurON strives to bolster and unify outreach programs that enable access to education in neuroscience for K-12 students in underserved communities.
