The mission of the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBDHub) is to build and strengthen partnerships across industry, academia, nonprofits, and government to address societal and scientific challenges, spur economic development, and accelerate innovation in the national big data ecosystem.
In our endeavor to increase data science capacity and talent, the NEBDHub team is committed to developing data science programs and resources which are accessible, ingestible, and digestible for everyone. Our approach is grounded in the FAIR Data Principles, which stipulate that digital assets should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
To effectively build and maintain our community of practice, we are always mindful to leverage the power of data responsibly, and work to improve accessibility to data and insights. Our focus on Responsible Data Science reinforces our emphasis on data science education that is secure, private, and ethical.
Transcription & Translation Initiative

One way the NEBDHub team maintains our commitment to accessible, ingestible, and digestible data science education is through our Transcription & Translation Initiative. This program was begun in February 2022, when a team of NEBDHub students, staff, and volunteers began to translate the 148 Lightning Talks presentations given by NSF, NIH, and CDC-funded researchers through the COVID Information Commons (CIC).
The CIC is an open website to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across various COVID research efforts funded by NSF. The CIC brings together NSF and NIH-funded researchers studying the COVID pandemic to share their research and answer questions from our community. The resulting Lightning Talks are shared and hosted on the CIC website where they can be sorted and browsed by theme or title. Our team has translated these English language presentations into French, Hindi, and Universal Spanish, broadening the program’s reach to include a broader swath of the NEBDHub community.
